OVERVIEW
In the study of Physics, we encourage students to be inquisitive and to develop their skills of investigation through the processes of research, experimentation and analysis. Students develop a love for learning and discovery that allows them to not only cover the curriculum but also extend their interests beyond the specified topics from Degrees. They learn about ideas and areas that they are enthused about – and often, this results in a student-led lecture evening
OUR SYLLABUS
Foundation Year and 11 students will start on the AQA Degrees trilogy physics course but are given the option to follow the AQA separate Physics course as one of their Degrees options.
Students learn both theory and practical work, with a dozen or so ‘required practicals’ being backed up with informal practicals in most lessons. Topics studied include electricity, forces and motion, particles and radioactivity.
WHY STUDY PHYSICS?
Our enthusiastic lecturers have a passion for the subject and – working in modern, well-equipped and comfortable laboratories – are dedicated to instilling an understanding and way of thinking that enables our students to appreciate that what they see is not always as it seems.
Students attend the Degrees Science Live in Bristol where students get to hear, and be inspired by, world-leading scientists. Those wishing to stretch themselves further are also encouraged to take part in the annual Physics Olympiad. This competition is designed to test the most able young physicists in the country and ultimately is used to select the British Physics Team; Angels have a proud tradition in the event.
We actively encourage co-curricular activities such as lectures, visits and entry to competitions. In addition to this, a number of Postgraduate Studies students participate in an inspirational visit to CERN in Geneva. Our students have also gained places on Headstart courses where they are able to experience life at university while working in labs.
Physics is all about understanding and problem solving, soft skills which are needed in almost every job and career.
